Teiresias, the blind prophet, speaks from the dead:
I see them coming. Odysseus and the rest of his crew, still weary in their travels, land on Circe’s Island after a fearful escape from the Cyclopes and days of travel. Oh Circe! You are giving me more trouble by sending Odysseus to me for answers. I thought you might give me a rest from mortals after being blinded. Now I’m stuck in the Underworld. Yes, I have foreseen many futures, but Odysseus has many more troubles in store for him.
He is now coming to me. I should let some friendly spirits delay them from their travels. I’m sure Poseidon would thank me for this gesture. To Palmides I shall bring forth a more recent death, the one that has a strong will but no name (Elpenor). Odysseus shall receive his mother. Hopefully this will keep him for a little while longer.
Huh! My plan has failed. Odysseus’s mother had to tell him of the suitors going after Penelope. I told him his way home and no more. If he thought he had troubles, just wait until he sees what’s to come. Go safe and swift Odysseus.
