From the ship’s log of Odysseus:
I am Odysseus, a Greek prince. I am on my way home from a very tough battle with the Trojans. I beached my ship on this strange land, not knowing of what was to come. I took twelve men with me to go exploring because we all were in need of food. We had come up on a cave open toward the sea. We went toward the cave, but there was no one home, so we entered and saw the owner’s shelves with different cheeses and pails full of milk.
Polyphemus finally came down from the mountains; he was hideous and huge and tall as the mountains. Herding his flock in front of him in to his cave, he entered and rolled a huge round stone in front of the entrance, and he looked around and saw us. He thought we were pirates, but we we told him we weren’t. Then he tried to eat us all but didn’t. Then we fed him wine and made music to make him fall asleep. When he did, we sharpened the end of a log and shoved it deep in to his single eye. He woke up with a roar; he moved the stone that was blocking the entrance, and he stood in the doorway as the sheep ran between his feet. We gott past him and make our way to the ship. As we were sailing off, Polyphemus threw a big stone at us.
