Waiting

Penelope’s side of the story:

I am Queen Penelope the beautiful wife of the king of Ithaca, Odysseus. My wonderful husband and father of my son Telemachus left 10 odd years ago to go to war with a city called Troy. My husband should be coming home soon. My son and I miss him very much even though Telemachus doesn’t really remember him. When Odysseus left, Telemachus was just a baby; now he has grown into a handsome young man.

Every day I watch and wait for his ship to pull into port. It’s hard not knowing if your husband is going to return dead or alive or if your son is going to have to grow up without a father. Whenever I see a ship coming up, I scream his name, longing for it to be him, but it seems like it never is… I get my hopes up as well as my son’s, who deserves to know who his father is.

Every day is a constant battle of men trying to woo me... and I don’t think it’s because of my beauty (of course that does help). I think it’s because of my husband being gone; people are trying to get to me hoping to take his place as king. Although it is flattering, it’s just not going to happen. I love my husband and have every intention of waiting on him to return.
